Ford is teaming up with Agility Robotics to explore how the company’s new Digit Robot can help to get packages to your door efficiently. This Digit robot will work collaboratively with self-driving vehicles. Also, it can walk upstairs and past or avoid unexpected obstacles to get packages straight to your doorstep.
Every day online shopping is continuously increasing and these types of robots will become so much useful in the future. This will also free people up to focus less on the logistics of making deliveries and they can turn their time and effort into things that really need their attention.
So how this is going to deliver packages? When you order a package online. The company will prepare your order and the Digit robot will put the package in a self-driving car. When this car reaches its destination, Digit will be deployed to grab a package from the vehicle and carry out the final step in the delivery process.
This two-legged robot doesn’t look like humans but it walks like humans. It is made up of lightweight materials. It can lift packages up to 40 pounds (18 Kg). Digit Robot can walk upstairs without losing balance. It can also avoid obstacles in the path. The robot can walk on uneven terrain easily. It can react to bumps without falling or losing its balance.
Digit Robot has a LiDAR system, a few stereo cameras, and a sensor setup which helps to easily navigate through the basic scenarios. If it encounters something unexpected, the images of the scenario can be sent to the vehicle for the solution. The self-driving vehicle which will be outfitted with all the sensors and software can also send the data to the cloud and request help from other systems to enable Digit to navigate and assist the robot.
This project is very important and has the potential to change the transportation industry. It is another example of robots that are programmed or operated remotely replacing human workers in the industry.
You have seen drones used by the military in attacks that eliminate the loss of human soldiers. Also, in rescue operations drones are becoming a priority to deliver supplies. Similar to that, these package delivery robots can be so useful in the transportation industry.
There might be positive and negative reactions from the public to this type of transportation system. For some people, it will be a relief as there will be no more lousy deliverers tossing packages over fences! Also, there can be problems that occur like stealing or robbing the robot. In that case, a self-defense system should be included by the Ford company.
Overall, Ford company and Agility Robotics are working on a very interesting project. And of course, Digit Robot is designed to deliver packages, not haunt your dreams!

Digit’s purpose is to improve efficiency, not necessarily replace workers. It could handle deliveries in difficult-to-reach areas or during off-hours, allowing human workers to focus on other tasks.
What are the benefits of using delivery robots?
Delivery robots offer 24/7 availability, can navigate uneven terrain, and potentially reduce delivery costs. They may also improve delivery times and reliability.
Are delivery robots safe?
Digit is designed with safety features like sensors and cameras to avoid obstacles and navigate safely. Regulations and standards for robot operation in public spaces are still under development.
When will delivery robots become commonplace?
The widespread adoption of delivery robots depends on factors like technological advancements, cost-effectiveness, and public acceptance. It may take several years before they become commonplace.
Can I order something delivered by a robot now?
Digit is currently in the development and testing phase. Delivery robot services are not yet widely available to the public.
